Corfu has a huge range of year-round holiday accommodation from luxurious hotel complexes with every conceivable creature comfort to basic domatia and pensions. The busiest beach resorts are dominated by hotels and apartments which are generally block-booked by the tour operators in high season. If you're on a tight budget your best bet is to head for one of several good camp sites on the island or find a room to rent in one of the less tourist-orientated villages.
It's unwise to arrive on Corfu in July and August without a reservation but if you decide to take a chance you might strike lucky with one of the local domatia owners who sometimes meet incoming ferries if they have rooms available. Otherwise try the Room Owners' Association, near the tourist office to the south west of the Esplanade in Corfu Town, which keeps a list of all rooms on the island and can supply phone numbers.
Corfu Town is busy throughout the year and accommodation tends to be relatively pricey compared with other Greek island capitals. If money's no object and you want to be near the centre of the action in town then try the sumptuous Corfu Palace which ranks as one of the most elegant hotels in the whole of Greece. Set in sub-tropical gardens overlooking Garitsa Bay, just 100 metres from the town centre, this top-class hotel oozes old-world grandeur while providing state of the art facilities.
A cheaper and more central option is the ever-popular Cavalieri Hotel, near the Liston arcade. The views from the rooftop garden of this eight-storey 18th century building are the best in town.
Package holidaymakers from Britain and other northern European countries stay in the countless hotels, villas and self-catering complexes which flank all the island's most popular seaside resorts - in particular Dasia, Ipsos and Kassiopi to the north east of the capital, Benitses and Kavos to the south, Sidhari on the north coast and Paleokastritsa over on the west coast. There's a huge choice of accommodation in all these resort areas so shop around well in advance for the best deal and make sure you know exactly what you're getting for your money. Many of the resort hotels offer excellent children's facilities (such as kiddies' pools, play areas and day time activities) and a packed programme of evening entertainment for adults in high season.
One of the most famous (perhaps we should say infamous?) holiday complexes on the island is the action-packed Pink Palace at Agios Gordhis on the west coast. The complex attracts hordes of backpackers and twenty-something budget travellers with its awesome range of facilities which include a nightly disco, theme nights, 24-hour bar, restaurants, watersports, games courts and much more besides (yes, there's even nude cliff diving!).
If you're more of a mature, literary type than a youthful binge-drinking party animal you might prefer to check into the White House in the village of Kalami in the north east corner of the island. This is the former home of the writers Lawrence and Gerald Durrell and the upper floor, above the taverna, can now be booked as holiday accommodation.
