Corfu is the second largest Ionian island and offers so much of interest both around the coastline and in its lovely, verdant interior that you might be tempted to hire a car or motorbike for at least part of your stay here. There are regular public buses serving all the main beach resorts and places of interest around the island or you could take advantage of one of the guided tours offered by local travel agents. But with the benefit of your own transport you'll be able to roam at will, uncovering beautiful quiet beaches and unspoilt inland villages.

There are plenty of rental firms offering cars, motorbikes, scooters and jeeps for hire in Corfu Town and in all the major resort areas. Unless you're travelling with a group, a motorbike is the ideal way of getting around the island because most of the countryside consists of gently rolling hills so you won't be faced with the treacherous mountain roads that make two-wheeled transport so hazardous on many Greek islands. Shop around for the best deal and insist that a helmet is included in the price. You have to wear one by law if you're riding anything more powerful than a 50cc bike but not all hire firms offer one (unless you press the point!).
If you're on a package holiday you can make daily forays out to the many places of interest around the island. Independent travellers have the appealing option of bedding down for a night or two in different corners of Corfu - exploring places off the beaten track by day and sampling the varied nightlife on offer in the island's towns, resorts and villages.
Fans of the much-loved writers Gerald and Lawrence Durrell will want to head up to the picturesque village of Kalami, in the north east corner of the island, to see the home of the brothers whose writing made the world fall head over heels in love with Corfu. Stop for lunch at the waterside White House taverna where the Durrells once lived.
Travel along the island's west coast to find some of the most beautiful beaches on Corfu including popular Paleokastritsa, where three lovely coves cluster around a wooded headland, and gorgeous Myrtiotissa, described by Lawrence Durrell as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
For a taste of the real Greece, far from the madding crowds which pack Corfu's seaside resorts throughout the summer, visit the delightful village of Vatos, two kilometres inland from Myrtiotissa. This sleepy village of whitewashed houses and flower filled balconies will give you a glimpse of the Corfu rarely seen by the sun and sand brigade who sadly never venture beyond the island's frantic beach resorts.
