Andros Beaches Greece - Greek Beach Holiday Guide

Andros has 110 kilometres of coastline and more than 300 sandy beaches, many of them accessible only on foot or by boat. Only the beach at Batsi - the tourist capital of the island - suffers from occasional over-crowding. Some of the most beautiful beaches are to be found in the north east corner of the island but they're also the hardest to reach. Most of the beaches consist of dark coarse sand but you'll also find some pebble beaches or a mix of the two.

The west coast has the largest number of popular beaches, to the north and south of Batsi. The port of Gavrio has a windswept beach but most visitors prefer to head further south to the better beaches of Agios Petros, Golden Beach and Agios Kyprianos. Water taxis run up and down this stretch of coastline connecting all the main beaches.

Agios Petros is the island's longest sandy beach - in a lovely setting between Gavrio and Batsi. It's ideal for windsurfing when the weather conditions are favourable. Nearby Golden Beach is the one to head for if you want daytime partying which is centred around the beachfront bar. The bar serves up cocktails and chart hits to young trendies who come here to see and be seen (in between games of beach volleyball).

Batsi is a highly orientated beach set in a beautiful natural bay and flanked by a plentiful supply of hotels, bars and tavernas. The 500-metre beach is protected from the sometimes violent meltemi north wind and the shallow water here makes the beach ideal for children. Watersports include windsurfing, canoeing, water and jet ski-ing and parascending. Sun shades and beds are available for hire and natural shade is provided by patches of young pine trees.

If Batsi gets too crowded there are a series of beaches to the south of the resort including Delavogia which is popular with naturists and Agia Marina which is more family-orientated.

Mpatis, eight kilometres south of Gavrio, is a pretty fishing village built round a sweeping sandy bay. The seafront is lined with cafes and the beach is another favourite among families with young children.

Anerousa, just round the bay from Batsi, is only 50 metres long but has a bar, sun shades and beds. It's primarily frequented by guests of the hotel of the same name above the beach.

On the other side of the island there are two beaches close to the capital, Andros Town - tourist-orientated Nimborio to the north of the town and less busy Paraporti to the south. Climb down the rocks at the end of the peninsula on which the town is built and you'll find a lovely swimming spot beneath the ruins of the ancient Venetian fortress. Andros Naval Club at Nimborio Port offers sailing and rowing.

The small beach of Ormos Korthiou, in the south east corner of the island, is in a beautiful location but stays relatively quiet. Korthi nautical club offers swimming and windsurfing lessons in July and August. From the water you'll be able to see the strange rock from which, according to legend, an old woman jumped to her death after helping the Turkish invaders gain entry to the Venetian Castle of Paleokastro. The ruined castle (also known as the Old Lady's Castle) is perched on a rocky plateau 18 kilometres south west of Andros.

There are several beaches to the north of Andros Town including Ahia which is one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Europe but is only accessible by small boat, moped or on foot. At Vori, a little further north, you can swim among the shipwrecks.
