Amorgos Night Life Greece - Greek Holidays

You don't come to Amorgos for the wildest nightlife in the Greek islands but there are some great little tavernas, a handful of music bars and a couple of late night spots where you can dance till the small hours.

If it's "anything goes" round-the-clock partying you're after you'll be better off on Mykonos or Ios. An evening out on Amorgos rarely consists of anything livelier than an ouzo or two as the sun goes down followed by some traditional Greek fare in one of the island's many good quality restaurants.

You'll find some fairly low key nightlife in the two ports of Katapola and Aegiali and in the island capital, Hora. The capital's best restaurant is Liotrivi below the bus station. There are wonderful views from the outdoor dining terrace and the chef serves up some mouthwatering local specialties including kalogiros (aubergine with veal, cheese and tomato) and exohiko (lamb and vegetables in a pastry case).

Bayoko by the bus station is a good spot to enjoy a drink while you watch the sun go down over the bay. Try some psimeni raki - the local sweet version of cinnamon-flavoured raki.

Later in the evening there's dancing to chart music and Greek pop. Vegara is a lively music bar and café or try Zygos which often has dancing till 5am in the summer months.

There are plenty of good tavernas down at the waterfront in Katapola including popular Mourayio near the square across from the bus stop. The restaurant serves good quality traditional food and often has live Greek music. It stays open till 2am in high season.

The waterfront Minos Restaurant has lovely views of the bay and is good for fresh fish - try the delicious garides saganaki (fried shrimps with feta cheese). Vizentzos, at the northern end of the waterfront, also serves good seafood (pay by the kilo) as does nearby Psaropoula.

If you haven't already seen the cult movie The Big Blue, which was partly filmed on Amorgos, pop along to Le Grand Bleu bar in the Xilokeratidhi area of the port. The bar has a blue glow after dark and is packed with people watching the nightly screening of the Luc Besson classic. The nearby Moon Bar is more peaceful and less pricey or try 45 Strofes café-bar on the waterfront at Rahidi.

If you're dining out in Aegiali, the island's northern port, follow the crowds to To Limani which serves top quality traditional food, excellent fish dishes and good barrel wine. You'll find it along the single inland lane behind Aegialis Tours.

The home grown produce used at Lakki taverna results in some truly mouthwatering dishes and the souvlaki kebabs grilled in the open air are delicious. For a tasty selection of seafood appetisers head for To Koralli fish taverna (up the steps near the windmill).

Late night haunts include the Ble Café music bar which has wonderful views of the harbour and Delear beach bar where the drinks are a bit pricey but there's often live music. Disco The Que is a trendy beach café with a good mix of music or head for the more upmarket Corte Club at the elegant Aegialis Hotel which offers international and Greek dance music.
