Amorgos has an adequate bus service which will get you to all the main places of interest on the island but you may decide to hire a car or moped for at least part of your stay here. The island is a walkers' paradise but only the keenest and fittest of hikers will want to take on the challenge of exploring it all on foot. Hora is a healthy hike of about an hour uphill from Katapola and it's another four hours or so hard walking to Aegiali in the north.
Besides the road connecting the main port of Katapolawith the capital Hora this is really only a one-road island. Until the road between Hora and Aegiali was asphalted in the mid 90s the most convenient way of getting from end of Amorgos to the other was by boat.
Now it's a quick and easy drive from Kolofana in the south west corner of the island to the hill top village of Tholariain the north. You can use a series of unpaved roads and ancient donkey tracks to reach more remote areas with a motorbike or moped. But check that your travel insurance covers you for motorbike accidents because many policies don't. And remember that wearing a helmet is compulsory in Greeceif you're riding anything over 49 cc although you wouldn't think so to look at many of the local motorcyclists. In any event, it's a sensible precaution because there have been numerous cases of inexperienced foreigners ending up in hospital after coming a cropper on the hazardous roads of the Greek islands.
You'll find plenty of car and motorbike rental firms around the ferry docks including Synodinos Travel Agency and Corner Rentabike (both in Katapola) and Aegialis Tours in Aegiali.
With the freedom of your own set of wheels you'll be able to visit beautiful, unspoilt Hora - a delightful Cycladic concoction of whitewashed houses, twisting alleyways, windmills and Byzantine churches perched 400 metres above sea level. There are several good quality tavernas here and an interesting archaeological museum with pieces excavated from the island's ancient sites which were inhabited more than 4,000 years ago.
Drive over to the east coast to visit the stunning 11th century Hozoviotissis Monastery, built into the sheer cliff face and accessed by a climb up 350 steps. Below the monastery you'll find the famous beach of Agia Anna which was one of the locations for Luc Besson's cult film The Big Blue.
Drive south west to Kolofana and walk down to the lovely remote beaches of Kato Kambos and Paradhisa overlooking the islet of Gramvoussa.
Head north to the seaside resort of Aegiali and take the time to visit the hill top villages of Tholaria and Langadha. The latter is without doubt the prettiest village on the island with a stepped main street painted with daisies and the excellent Nikos Taverna where you can enjoy fresh goat meat from the grill, warm bread from the next door bakery and locally made wine and goat's cheese.
