The Grand Canyon Lodge

Situated perfectly between pines and canyon edge, The Grand Canyon Lodge offers the only accommodation on the North Rim. Large and affordable, this historic hotel has a number of motel rooms and cabins to choose from as well as dining facilities and easy access to hiking and walking trails.

History of the Lodge

The original Grand Canyon Lodge was built on Bright Angel Point in 1928. After burning to the ground in 1932 the Lodge was rebuilt five years later under the direction of architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood. Today Underwood’s design, still standing in all its rustic stone and timbered glory, is a National Historic Landmark.

Rates and reservations

With 165 informal cabins and 40 motel rooms, the Grand Canyon Lodge offers relatively inexpensive lodging; motel rooms cost $91 per night and cabins cost between $92 and $121 per night. A main lobby filled with comfortable leather furniture, antique registration desk and hand hewn wood beams reinforce the Lodge’s historic mountain beauty.

All motel rooms have one queen size bed and private bathroom and sleep three people with the addition of a roll-away bed. There are three levels of cabin to choose from:

Western Cabins sleep four people with two queen size beds, a full bathroom and front porch.

Frontier Cabins sleep three people with one double bed, one single bed and a shower-only bathroom.

Pioneer Cabins sleep five with two bedrooms containing a double bed, three single beds and a shower-only bathroom.

Visit the Lodge online at www.grandcanyonnorthrim.com or call toll-free within the U.S. 1 888 29 PARKS (72757), from outside the U.S. (1) 303 297 2757. Please note; the Lodge is only accessible when the North Rim is open to visitors from mid May to mid October or as dictated by the weather.

Food and drink

The Grand Canyon Lodge Dining Room is open daily from 6:30 am to 9:30 pm. Sit down to breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining room while enjoying breathtaking views of the canyon. Dishes range in price from $7 to $25. Dinner reservations are required; call (928) 638 2612 ext. 160.

Stop by the Rough Rider Saloon (open from 11 AM to 10 PM) to unwind after a day of hard hiking. The Saloon offers gourmet coffee and pastries from 5 AM to 9 PM daily. For a quick bite visit the Lodge’s snack shop, open daily from 7 AM to 9 PM.

The scenery

Sitting and relaxing on the Lodge’s porch or one of its two balconies affords terrific views of the canyon. There is also a sunroom if you want to sit with a book or simply watch the eagles soar above the canyon.

If you prefer to hike, the area along the Lodge offers easy access to some easy trails. Walk the paved half mile trail to Bright Angel Point; from here you should be able to hear the rushing water of Roaring Springs. For a longer hike, the Transept Trail leads from the Lodge to the camping area; grab some supplies from the Lodge’s camper store and make a day of it.
