Many readers will have visited Tenerife for a typical beach holiday in the past and be fully aware of the diverse nature of the island, ranging from the quaint old towns of La Laguna and La Orotava to the lively coastal resorts of Las Americas and Los Cristianos.
Where Tenerife golf courses are concerned, we have selected two to look at in detail in order to whet your appetite. One is in the far north near the island's quieter regions and one is in the south for golfers who are planning to play at night as well as during the day!
Real Club de Tenerife is the second oldest club in the whole of Spain and has fairways lined with mature trees, an unusual site for Tenerife where the trend is for newer manmade courses. This Par 71 course has tremendous views over to Mount Teide and offers a slightly cooler climate than in the south. One word of warning is that Real Club is the only golf course in this region so you will either have to play it a number of times or travel across the island to the courses in the south.
Golf Del Sur was built in 1987 and is the location where the longest drive ever recorded was hit; a 408 yard strike by little known professional Karl Woodward. An unusual characteristic of this course is the black bunkers, which are made from sand from the neighbouring Teide volcano. This is the home of the Tenerife Open where world stars such as Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els have all tried their hand around Golf Del Sur.
