Mauritius Golf Holidays - Golfing Package Vacations

Tavel Tips - Save & DIY - Insurance

Mauritius golf holidays have not always been an option for British travellers. Not so long ago the islands of the Indian Ocean were unknown as a tourist destination. When thinking of palm trees, white sands and blue seas people dreamt of the Caribbean or the South Pacific. However the seventh sea is finally coming into its own and the island of Mauritius is making a name for itself as the golfing capital of the region.

Although it is positioned adjacent to eastern Africa, Mauritius is more influenced by its British and French ties and huge Indian workforce. Nowhere else in the world can you entertain curried chickpeas inside a Yorkshire pudding on the terrace of an authentic French café!!

Those who think Mauritius is prohibitively expensive for a golfing holiday must look more closely. Compared to traditional European resorts the cost of the actual holiday is indeed much greater, but when you are there the cost of food, drinks and pretty much everything else is incredibly inexpensive.

As you would expect Mauritius offers a range of top-class hotels set on gorgeous tropical beaches. What some people will no doubt be surprised to learn is that it is also the perfect location to combine golf with this island luxury.

The main resort is Belle Mare Plage. This has two main courses, one was designed by South African golfer Hugh Biaocchi and the other by Peter Alliss. The former is called the 'Legend' and is a visual treat with parts of the course having been carved out of bush covered volcanic rock. Accuracy down the tree lined fairways is the key challenge you will face, as most holes provide large helpful greens often set in gorgeous natural backdrops.

The second course at the Belle Mare Plage resort is called the 'Links'. It doesn't take long to realise why as it has a genuine Scottish links feel to it with its highly exposed location and rolling terrain.

There are two other courses on Mauritius - Beachcomber La Paradis and Le Saint Geran. La Paradis is situated on a secluded private peninsula at the foot of the majestic Le More mountain. It offers a unique golfing experience and challenge for all types of golfer.

Le Saint Geran is a nine-hole course which was designed by former world number one, Gary Player. It is located very close to Le Saint Geran Hotel and is right in the middle of a plantation of four thousand coconut trees! The course also includes the David Leadbetter Golf Academy. David Leadbetter is widely regarded as the greatest golf teacher in the world and Le Saint Geran offers lessons from professionals trained by him.

Golf in Mauritius; unconventional but totally inspirational.
