The Algarve, which is synonymous with golfing holidays and vacations, stretches along the South coast of Portugal from Castro Marim in the east to Parque do Floresta in the west. You won't have to travel far from your hotel to find good golf in the Algarve - even the most distant courses are no more than two hours from the airport at Faro.

The Algarve's popularity with visitors from Europe and further afield means it is one of the most frequented golf regions in the world. It is particularly popular during Spring and Autumn when temperatures are still conducive to an enjoyable 18 holes. For those people wanting to avoid the very hot mid season temperatures, Portugal does have resorts with cooler climates during the summer months.
The Algarve's popularity means that early booking both of your tee times and hotel is essential. Be aware, the market is very competitive and many courses do not confirm any booking until two weeks in advance and others have special affiliation deals with certain hotels whose clients receive priority for all tee times.
The number of courses throughout the Algarve is incredible; Villamoura itself boasts five independent courses, all par 72 and over 6,500 yards. The more famous and popular courses are in the central Algarve with courses such as 'Golf Pinheiros Altos' and the Victoria Club at Villamoura which opened in April 2004.
Central Algarve is where you may encounter problems with tee off times and slow play. As with many resorts around the world it is worth venturing that little bit further to find unexpected gems that provide high quality golf without the frustrations identified above. As far as the Algarve is concerned these courses can be found in the East and West of the region in places such as Golf Boavista and Golf Morgado.
Whatever your holiday requirements, unless you want golf in the snow played with an orange ball, the Algarve can meet them all, and much, much more besides.
