Champs Elysées
Champs Elysées in Paris

In Paris, hotels are more expensive than anywhere else in France. They are not the most expensive in Europe, however, as you might expect. There is a gamut of styles and prices to choose from when you are looking for a hotel in Paris. A small room with a washbasin can be found for about €30 in the 20e or (less posh parts of) the 17e. In general you are likely to pay €55 to €85 for a double room in a normal Paris hotel, and about €100 for anything with style. There are some bargains to be snapped up in the 11e. As a Paris hotel can always be sure of being fully booked up at the weekend, they tend to only save their smallest rooms, or the rooms at the back, for last minute deals. Therefore it is advisable to book early in order to get the best rooms. The tourist office on the Champs Elysées will book a room for you on that night if you get stuck. They charge between €3 and €8 commission depending on the number of stars the hotel has.

One of the most celebrated hotels is the Hotel Costes, a dark red and broody hotel with lots of class. If you can't afford a room then just grab a drink in the patio bar, which is always full of celebrities. The Hotel de Crillon in place de la Concorde is another luxury Paris hotel.

At the other extreme of Paris accommodation are hostels. There is a decent selection of hostels in Paris, some provided by certified organisations, some by private companies, such as the Young & Happy hostel at 80 rue Mouffetard (01 45 35 09 53). The Fédération Unie des Auberges de Jeunesse (FUAJ) provides hostels in Paris for which you will need Hostelling International (HI) membership (you can buy this on the spot and there is no age limit). UCRIF (Union des Centres de Rencontres Internationaux de France) has hostel rooms from €20 a night for a dorm room. Singles and doubles usually cost an extra €5 - €10 per night. Student accommodation is let out over the summer for around €15 to €30 per night for a room with shared kitchen and bathrooms. They fill up very fast with international students though so book early. Called CROUS on 01 40 51 55 55, or write to them at the Académie de Paris, 39 avenue Georges-Bernanos, 75005 Paris.

Paris has three campsites. All are fairly decent but a pain to get to on public transport. They are situated in the Bois de Boulogne, Torcy in the eastern suburbs and St-Quentin-en-Yvelines in the western suburbs. It costs from €12 to €15 per night for two people and a tent.
