Alternatively there is the dedicated Backpackers' Hotel at 32 rue Pertinax (04 93 80 30 72), which is near the station but has good, clean dorms for up to six people for a very reasonable €17 or thereabouts.

There is also no curfew, which is good for those hoping to sample some of Nice's nightlife. Les Orangers is a couple of streets over to the west at 10bis avenue Durante (04 93 87 51 41) and has rooms popular with American students for under €30.
As the town is among the more glitzy venues in France and popular with the well-to-do, Nice's hotels have to cater for the upper end of the market as well, which they do admirably. Possibly the most exorbitant and luxurious of Nice's hotels is La Pérouse at 11 quai Rauba-Capeu (04 93 62 34 63), which has rooms with views out to sea for over €150. For Belle Époque elegance and seamless service, the fin-de-siècle Negresco at 37 promenade des Anglais is surely the place to go. It is decorated with Russian, French and English chandeliers, portraits and graceful objects and, for over €150, you can live it up in one of the generously-proportioned bedrooms.
Between these two extremes is a gamut of mid-range hotels such as the Cronstadt at 3 rue Cronstadt (04 93 82 00 30), only one street away from the seafront and with clean, charming rooms for about €55-70 per night. Le Capitole at 4 rue de la Tour (04 93 80 08 15) is in a central location in the old town, but the rooms you get for your €55-70 are slightly pokier than you might like. If space is what you are after, the Comté de Nice at 29 rue de Dijon (04 93 88 94 56) has modern, spacious rooms in a quiet neighbourhood for the same price as Le Capitole.
Food in Nice is influenced by Italian and Provencal styles, so expect olives, basil, goat's cheese and fish to make an appearance on most menus. The old town has many restaurants but be sure to book or turn up early to get a table during the summer. The best restaurant in town, however, is the Chantecler at the Negresco (see above) with mouth-watering menus from €50 at lunchtime, or à la carte in the evenings from €90.
