The really top end accommodation in Lyon includes the Cour des Loges at 2-8 rue du Boeuf in the 5th arrondissement (04 72 77 44 44), where star chef Nicolas Le Bec runs the restaurant in this 17th-century Jesuit college and rooms cost over €150. Luxury and interesting décor are also available at Globe et Cécil, 21 rue Gasparin in the 2 nd arrondissement (04 78 42 58 95) with good service and rooms from €125-150.

Lyon also has plenty of hotels for the tighter budget, starting off at under €30 with places like the Vaubecour at 28 rue Vaubecour in the 2 nd arrondissement (04 78 37 44 91), which is comfortably furnished for the price, and the De la Poste at 1 rue Victor-Fort in the 4th arrondissement, a more old-fashioned budget hotel. The De la Marne at 78 rue de la Charité (04 78 37 07 46) is a hop, skip and a jump from the excellent Musée des Tissus in the 2 nd arrondissement, and it presents excellent value for money with clean rooms from €30-40.
Mid-range Lyon hotels include the Foch at 59 avenue Maréchal-Foch (04 78 89 14 01) in the 6th arrondissement, located near to the park and with soundproofed rooms from €70-85, and the slightly cheaper Du Théatre at 10 rue de Savoie (04 78 42 33 32) in the 2 nd arrondissement with comfortable and characterful rooms from €40-55.
Lyon is a centre for gastronomy so you will find dishes from all over France served in the many restaurants here. The old town is crammed with places to eat, but the area around place des Jacobins and place Satonay on the Presqu'île is usually quieter and cheaper. It is a good plan to book ahead, especially at the weekends. For traditional Lyonnais restaurants called bouchons, try the rue Mercière. A couple of good eateries in the old town include the popular L'Amphitryon, 33 rue St-Jean (04 78 37 23 68) with Lyonnais menus from €12, and La Tour Rose at 22 rue Boeuf (04 78 92 69 11), a more upmarket establishment with prices starting at €32 for dishes including lobster with truffle sauce.
