Golf in France

Whether you are going on a golf holiday in France or you just fancy a few rounds once you are out there, the regional tourist office should be able to help you locate a range of golf courses, for different abilities and budgets. In France golf is a very popular leisure activity, brought over by the English when they came to take the Pyrenean air in the nineteenth century.

The first golf course to be opened in continental Europe was at Pau in southwest France, opened in 1856. Nearby at Biarritz Le Phare is an equally challenging and well-kept course that was opened thirty years later. These are both early examples of French golf courses: there are now more than five hundred golf courses in France! It is hardly surprising that some of France's beautiful, open countryside has been turned into golf courses, several of which are among the best courses in the world.

The difficult Les Bordes course near Orléans has good practice facilities and a huge putting green, and it is kept in perfect condition. Royal Park Evian is where the Evian Masters women's tournament is held near Geneva. To the east of France, Kempferhof outside Strasbourg is another top French golf course. Spérone in Corsica is quite a technical course, particularly when the wind gets up, but the views are worth the effort and you can even see Sardinia on a clear day. If you are looking for a golf course with good views but on mainland France, you need look no further than Provence and the Cote d'Azur which are well-stocked with testing and well-maintained golf courses. In particular, the Monte-Carlo Golf Club roosts on the slopes of Mont Agel about one thousand metres above sea level.

The stretch of coast from Biarritz to Bordeaux is something of a haven for golfers. There are the two old courses at Biarritz and Pau, then the Chiberta Golf Club near Biarritz mixes seashore and pine forest and is among France's best golf courses.

You can expect to pay somewhere between €40 and €60 for green fees, although the more exclusive courses will obviously charge a lot more.
