Cap d'Agde France - French Destinations
Languedoc Rousillon: Introduction > Albi > Béziers > Cap d'Agde > Carcassonne > Montpellier > Nimes > Narbonne > Toulouse > Toulouse HotelsThe Cap d'Agde is 7km from the town of Agde and is a successful and relatively new resort with modern buildings that attempt to be traditional, and thoroughly modern (and expensive) entertainments and facilities. There is a large quartier naturiste with a huge beach, arguably the best one in the area, that has room for 20,000 beachgoers. Everything you need is here, from post office to posh restaurants, although if you are not actually staying in the area you will have to pay to get in (€9 per car, €2.80 on foot) and be out again by 8pm.

The town of Agde itself is a pretty fishing port that dates back to Phoenician times. The Greeks also came here and gave the town its name - agathos is Greek for 'good' - but it was the Romans who maintained it and it traded successfully with the Levant until nearby Sète overtook it as a seaport. Tourists flock here because it is quiet and picturesque, with no massively important sights to visit so that you can simply relax and enjoy the sunshine. Between the River Hérault and the rue de l'Amour run charming narrow lanes that are good for a meander, and the fortified Cathédrale St-Étienne is quite impressive. It was built on the foundations of a 5th-century Roman church and consists mainly of 12th-century architecture in grey basalt, from the volcanic Mont St-Loup quarries. This dark stone characterises much of the town's buildings, which makes Agde look quite distinctive.
An old convent at 16 rue Louis-Bages houses the Hôtel des Arcades (04 67 94 21 64), which has comfortable rooms for €30-40, or Le Donjon (04 67 94 12 32) offers a little more for €40-55. The best hotel in Agde is probably La Gailote in the old bishop's palace on place Jean-Jaurès (04 67 21 30 28) with rooms from €30-85 per night. Good fish-based meals can be found at Casa Pépé at 29 rue Jean-Roger (04 67 21 17 67) in the heart of the old town, where prices are around the €12 mark. Good €9.50 menus at Les Remparts or La Belle Agathoise near La Promenade offer a cheaper alternative, or there are numerous other eateries in the same area.
