Ferries to Spain - UK Ferry Routes to Southern Europe

If you've got the time and a love of travel on the ocean wave then the option of taking one of the ferries to Spain may be for you. And if you are taking your car to the Iberian Peninsular you can avoid the long drive through France and the Pyrenees, arriving fresh and relaxed for your holiday instead of drained by a long haul on the motorways.

But be warned, the Bay of Biscay can get pretty stormy at times so if you can't handle a bit of ocean swell, or possible worse, think twice about the trip. 24 hours is a long time to be clinging to the handrail! Both companies offering ferries to Spain take pride in providing cruise standard facilities on board so if its not the weather for the sundeck there'll be plenty of other distractions, not to mention fine dining, on board. Here are the routes of ferries to Spain:

Portsmouth to Bilbao - P&O Ferries operates sailings to Bilbao in northern Spain twice each week. The outward journey departs in the evening and after two nights at sea arrives in port first thing in the morning. The return trip is made in quicker time with just one night spent on board. All the usual shopping and dining facilities are on board, as well as a cinema, fitness suite, swimming pool and casino. Bilbao is a busy city with great cultural attractions in its own right as well as being the gateway to northern Spain and the Pyrenees.

Plymouth to Santander - Brittany Ferries runs a service on this quicker route to Spain, again with two sailings each week. The 18-hour trip includes one night on board Brittany Ferries' flagship the Pont-Aven, again with cinemas, pools and a choice of dining and entertainment. The departure port of Plymouth is particularly convenient for travellers from the midlands and north, with motorway links via the M5. The beautiful city of Santander, an ancient destination for pilgrims from across Europe, is also a great starting off point for onward travel to the rest of Spain and Portugal.

All ferries to Spain take cars, caravans, motorcycles and foot passengers and provide cabin accommodation in a range of classes. Passengers with disabilities are welcomed but should make any special requirements known to their ferry operator before travelling.. Pets can now be taken and return without quarantine if you prepare in advance (see http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm). For more information on specific departure times contact the ferry operator on your chosen route.
