Sea France is a French-owned ferry operator providing services on the Dover to Calais crossing. Competition is stiff between the various providers of cross-channel services on this route, and some may think that the quality of onboard service doesn't really matter on such a short journey, but SeaFrance hope to entice you with a uniquely French flavour to their service. As well as a constantly updated fleet, and modern services, there is a French feel to the dining and shopping on board and a commitment to providing well researched French travel and holiday information. Their main function will always be, however, simply getting the large numbers of car, rail and foot passengers over the channel.
SeaFrance ferries depart 15 times a day from Dover and also on the return trip from Calais. Crossing time is one hour 30 minutes except on their newest ferry, the SeaFrance Rodin, the fastest ferry from Dover, which makes the crossing in an hour and 10 minutes. You will have to book yourself onto a ferry at a specific time, but should you miss it they will endeavour to get you on the next service.
Access to the ferry terminal at Dover by car is simple - just follow signs to the Eastern Docks when you come into the town from the A20 or A2, and follow your nose and more signs to the SeaFrance check-in. Passports and a booking reference number or boarding pass will be required at that time. Foot passengers should proceed to the main terminal building and follow signs for boarding. The return journey at Calais is similarly straightforward - by car keep following the Car Ferry signs off the motorway until you're almost on the boat!
On board services are designed to make you feel like you're in France before even leaving Dover. For dining, La Brasserie offers fine French food and daily specials, while Le Relais is a more relaxed self-service restaurant with an international spread from Indian to fish and chips, as well as breakfasts. For simple filled baguettes and French snacks and patisseries, Le Parisien CafÈ is the place to go. If you want your French holiday to start as soon as possible, SeaFrance seem to try to make that possible on top of all the usual ferry services; shopping for alcohol, tobacco, perfume and clothing is all there as well as currency exchange. Look out too for seasonal promotions and special events - SeaFrance organise property surgeries and wine tastings on board for example. More info about the company and the latest deals can be found at www.seafrance.com.
