Visit their sites - P&O - DFDS

North Sea ferries have always provided an alternative but time consuming method of travel for those afraid of flying or for those who simply enjoy being out on the ocean wave. There are of course many pros and cons, but the obvious advantage of going by ferry is that you can take your car with you and avoid expensive travel costs when you arrive.

Companies such as DFDS Seaways and P and O North Sea Ferries provide services across the North Sea to a variety of destinations. DFDS for example provide services from Harwich in Essex to countries including Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Their ferries also travel from Newcastle to a similar range of places around the North Sea area.

P and O North Sea ferries offer services between the same routes including a service from Hull to Zeebrugge and The Hook of Holland, and other companies like Stena Line provide a route going from Harwich to the Hook of Holland.

If you're after a Scandinavian getaway and want to experience the magisterial nature and amazing scenery of Norway and Sweden probably the best way to do it is by car, especially if you have a family.

DFDS Seaways ferry crossings offer a service going from Newcastle to Kristiansand in southern Norway and Gothenburg in Sweden. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Fjords and the gentle rolling countryside and stunning coastlines of Sweden on a perfect self-drive holiday.

Ferries depart on Monday and Friday afternoons sailing overnight to arrive the following morning. To travel directly to the Fjords go with Fjord Line from Newcastle to Bergen, Haugesund and Stavanger. If you want to explore Denmark take the ferry from Harwich to Esbjerg in the northern part of Denmark.

DFDS also offer a crossing from Harwich to Cuxhaven in Germany which serves as a great place to explore Germany from as well as other places of interest such as Prague and Vienna and other famous German towns like Frankfurt, Hamburg and Bremen. DFDS also offer a service from Newcastle to Ijmuiden just outside of Amsterdam.

The 'Drive Alive holiday planner' is a handy service offered by DFDS that allows you to select your journey route and choice of hotel and leave the rest of the arrangements and bookings up to them. They will be able to negotiate a much cheaper price for you because of their knowledge of local hoteliers.

Getting there on North Sea ferries and continuing on a self-drive holiday is the most convenient option for those with families, but not only that, it's also a great way to see the country that you're visiting at your own pace without the restrictions of a rigid itinerary getting in the way.
