The strong connections between the northwest of England and Northern Ireland mean that the Liverpool Belfast ferries have been popular for some time. Travellers from further afield may also prefer this route because its has the option of an overnight sailing, arriving bright and early in Belfast for easy onwards travel in Ulster and the Republic of Ireland. If you are coming from the south of England it is the first port on the west coast to offer ferry services to Belfast, and it is easily accessible from the western motorway network and by train from the whole country.

At present Norse Merchant (now called Norfolkline.com) ferries are the sole operator of the Liverpool Belfast ferry route. They run two sailings every day, one in the morning and the overnight crossing leaving late in the evening. Passengers are advised to check precise departure times 24 hours before departure, as times can change due to tidal and weather conditions. The crossing time is about eight hours. Fares include a substantial meal and breakfast or snack and cabins for motorists. Cabins are available for foot passengers for a supplementary charge. Other facilities onboard include a cinema, shop and childrens' play area.

Ferries depart from the Norse Merchant terminal in Birkenhead, across the Mersey from Liverpool city centre. To avoid the city from the M6 take the M56 and then the M53 onto the Wirral. Leave the motorway following signs for the Wallasey Docks. Follow the Wallasey Docks Road for about two miles and turn right at a roundabout onto Tower Road. After crossing the Four Bridges the Norse Merchant Terminal is on the left.
From Liverpool city centre take the Wallasey tunnel under the Mersey and turn left on exiting into Gorsey Lane. Turn left again at the next lights and follow the Dock Road to another roundabout. Turn right on to Tower Road, cross the Four Bridges and find the terminal on your left.
If using the Birkenhead (Queensway) Tunnel take an immediate left (u-turn) to the toll booth (unmanned - correct payment is required) and enter Chester Street. Continue ahead to Canning Street and proceed to the third set of traffic lights. Turn right and the entrance to the NorseMerchant Ferries Terminal is on the left.
If you are arriving by train the closest station is in Hamilton Square in Birkenhead, walking distance from the ferry terminal - just follow the signs. Passengers arriving at Liverpool Lime Street station should make their way to Birkenhead by taxi. Short term and long term parking is available at the terminal.

Even if you are just passing through and only have a few hours there are many good reasons to spend them in either Liverpool or Belfast; Liverpool especially has a rich maritime history and its importance as a cultural centre is being recognized in its designation as European City of Culture 2008.
