Paphos offers a wide range of hotels, spanning everything from wallet-punishing luxury resorts to flea-bitten backpacker dives. Despite the best efforts of local developers, much of Paphos’ historic charm remains and visitors can choose to surround themselves with slick 21st century creature-comforts or opt for more humble ‘traditional’ lodgings
The neon-lit harbour area isn’t to everyone’s taste, but the town centre at Ktima (three kilometres uphill) has a number of graceful neo-classical buildings, impressive Roman remains and an altogether more genteel atmosphere. Holidaymakers are strongly advised to book in advance, as the chances of just turning up and finding something on spec are slim. The lion’s share of visitors arrive on ‘all-inclusive’ packages and block bookings mean that free rooms are virtually unheard of during the high-season. Currently there are several hotels jostling for the status of guidebook favourite, any of which would be great for a two-week break.
The Amathus Beach Hotel
According to the hotel’s blurb, the Amathus beach hotel was ‘conceived of a deep-rooted desire to fulfil the ancient tradition of genuine hospitality in the modern luxury of five star accommodation’. And with two swimming pools, an enviable waterfront location, a fully equipped gym and spa, three tennis courts and a good selection of bars and restaurants; they seem to ha’ve made a fairly good job of it.

The Annabelle Hotel is another of Paphos’ five star contenders. The hotel is within walking distance of the harbour, but enjoys a relaxed ambience. However, there’s so much to do that you hardly need venture beyond the hotel’s six acres of tropical gardens.
