Package Holidays to Cyprus

Cyprus has long been popular with British holidaymakers and our love affair with Aphrodite’s island looks set to continue for some time yet. The island’s location on the cusp of the Mediterranean and the Middle East guarantees clear skies and year-round sunshine. Cyprus’ nine thousand years of history means there’s plenty to see, and British colonisation during the last century has ensured strong cultural ties between the two distant islands. For the British holidaymaker, a reassuring sense of familiarity is evident in everything from the red postal boxes standing on street corners to town centre branches of Marks & Spencer.

Finding Package Holiday Deals

Consider using the wide variety of package holidays to Cyprus by using the Thomas Cook booking search.

Package holidays can be found through a variety of media, but the best starting point is undoubtedly the Internet. The proliferation of websites offering late deals continues unabated, as does the number of online travel agents selling cheap package holidays. Most charter companies (including JMC and Monarch) now have an online presence and are ever keen to increase their share of the package market. It’s also worth having a look at Teletext, especially if you are hoping to bag a cheap ‘last minute’ holiday. Packages to southern Cyprus can also be arranged through Cyprus Airways, the island’s national carrier.

The division of the island between the Greek-Cypriot South and the Turkish North means that visitors will need to decide what they want from their holiday before they begin looking. Cyprus has something of a split personality, with both sides offering distinct pleasures:

The South remains the firm favourite with British tourists. Its easy-going charms combine a rich and varied historical past with a contemporary attitude to having a good time. Throw in spectacular coastal scenery and year-round sunshine; and it’s easy to see why southern Cyprus is such popular choice. Hedonists should be able to get their fill in the party the towns of Ayia Napa and Limassol, while families make a beeline for the more relaxed resorts, such as Coral Bay and Protaras. However, the South isn’t to everyone’s taste and many lament the region’s overdevelopment.

The North has acquired a reputation as a hideaway for discerning travellers who want to see what Cyprus was like before the tourist hordes arrived. The North’s political isolation has proved something of an unexpected blessing for tourism industry. Overlooked for decades by greedy developers the untouched coastline remains as it has done for centuries. However, the situation looks set to change with EU accession making some kind of political settlement and détente likely. Holiday costs in the North are on the whole lower than in the South, although there isn’t the same scope for picking up cheap late deals.

Anyone intending to book a Cyprus package should start shopping around as soon as possible; as the island gets extremely busy in the high season (June to September).
