Start spreading the news - New York cruises are a great way to see a great city. In terms of entertainment, architecture and art, New York has some justification for proclaiming itself Capital of the World. Broadway, Manhattan, Central Park, Macy's and Bloomingdale's, Greenwich Village, the Statue of Liberty, the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim, Studio 54: New York City is so often where it all starts, and the tragedy it suffered in 2001 has not broken its spirit.

New York's buzz is no doubt due in part to its density - 7.5 million people in just over 300 square miles of Apple: Big, but not that Big. A cruise - be it a few hours or a weekend - is a good way to see the life of the city while taking a step back from it. There are lots of different New York cruises to choose from, and they can be booked ahead through a travel/cruise agent, or while you're staying in the city. There are evening cruises with live bands and dance floors, dining cruises, day-long cruises and shorter harbour cruises. All of these will afford a view of most of the city's landmarks - among them the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Brooklyn Bridge and skyscrapers including the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building - but there is a totally different ambience to day cruises and those at night, when the city lights make it into a different and in some ways more magical place. Trips to see the Statue of Liberty are particularly popular and run regularly - you won't need to book although you might have to wait half an hour or so.

If you're interested in New York's history, it's worth taking a longer cruise, perhaps along the Hudson River or into Harlem. Bear in mind that if you're visiting the city in winter you will need to wrap up very for an open-air cruise - even in the city temperatures can get down to well below zero, so you'll need to be well insulated if you don't want to become an icicle on the water.

For more ideas on how to take New York cruises, check websites such as www.citycruises.com or any good city guide. And when you've seen the city from the water, you might want to take another perspective on it - helicopter tours, though somewhat more expensive than a cruise, are also very popular. Bear in mind that they need to be booked in advance.
