There's nothing like a nicely turned down bed with a chocolate on the pillow to warm the soul. The rising popularity of cruising in general has been accompanied by growing taste for luxury cruises. Vintage wine, fine art, classy entertainment and absolutely no reason to lift a finger if you don't want to - even those of us who pretend we would rather go parascending in the Andes have to be a little tempted. Not that there isn't the opportunity for a little adventure amongst all the luxury - it's surprising what you can find on a cruise ship these days.

Luxury is in fact an official market classification, one down from the category of 'utterly exclusive' and one above 'premium'. Luxury ships are run by lines including Crystal, Cunard, Hebridean Cruises, Seabourn and Silversea. 'Premium' vessels such as those belonging to Windstar and Abercrombie and Kent can also be pretty luxurious though. The 'utterly exclusive' ships such as Hapag Lloyd's Europa and Residensea's cruise-ship-to-end-all-cruise-ships, The World, are the stuff of dreams (unless you're a millionaire, in which case you probably dream of camping).

The process of booking a luxury cruise is more or less the same as any cruise booking - visit a cruise agent (a good option), contact the lines directly or look at cruise booking sites. The difference is in the price. These cruises can cost thousands. If you aren't used to spending that much money on a holiday, it's important to be sure it's the holiday you want. There are other lower price-options for cruise which could be different but just as enjoyable as luxury. But there's little doubt that you will have a good time if you do pick an expensive cruise. Here is an idea of what you can expect on a few luxury cruises:

Silversea's cut crystal, high quality linen, personalized stationary, toiletries by Bvlgari and teak verandas are all touches intended to make the passenger feel special. Silver Shadow's Royal and Grand suites feature floor-to-ceiling glass doors, an ocean view dining area and marbled bathrooms with Jacuzzi. On Radisson's Seven Seas Voyager, every cabin is a balcony suite with at least 301 sq. ft of living space. Lavish suites are also a specialty on Crystal Cruises and Cunard. Crystal Symphony's Crystal Penthouses have living rooms, large verandas and (again) a Jacuzzi, while the Royal Suite trumps them for unusual additions by featuring a big white piano in the living room. Queen Mary 2, run by Cunard, is also in the running for most lavish cabins. Its 2,249 sq. ft. Grand Duplex suites contain a two-storey glass wall with private exercise area, marble bathrooms, veranda and - wait for it - butler.
