There are many ways in which you can experience the sights and sounds of the great capital, but perhaps the best and most atmospheric is by boat, cruising along the waters of the historic river Thames, and taking in the famous cultural and historic landmarks such as the Tower of London, HMS Belfast, Tate Modern, Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament, and Shakespeare's globe as you go.
There are many types of cruise available, and many companies to choose from. Among the most common and popular are the forty minute circular sightseeing cruises that take in all the main sights and include fascinating live commentaries with important historical facts and anecdotes thrown in that really bring the experience to life. These are often related by authentic, 'Cockneys' (indigenous Londoners) who bring an atmosphere of the real essence of London to the proceedings. If you're really lucky, you might even get to learn some Cockney rhyming slang along the way!
The boats themselves, for the main part, are comfortable and modern, often with open sun decks for a good clear view. Many of the boats offer commentaries in a selection of different languages, the most common being: French, Spanish, German and Japanese, where you use a hand held audio system with headphones.
Cruises usually start at around 11:45 in the morning and run on an hourly basis until around 19:00. Some of the cruises incorporate a 'flight' (or ride) on one of London's new main attractions, The London Eye (or The Millennium wheel) which affords without question, the best views over the capital (if you happen to have the stomach for such things!) On this particular journey, the river cruiser will dock right next to the wheel, where you will be put directly on board The London Eye. Prices for adults start at around ten pounds and cost around five pounds for children. It's definitely worth checking out the internet to book in advance because you might save yourself some money, and because high season is busy, busy, busy!
Although these historical sightseeing cruises are by far the most popular, there are many other kinds of cruise on offer. Why not try the river bus that runs from Greenwich to Westminster Bridge and back, as a cheaper way to sample some of the historical delights of Greenwich, such as the famous tea clipper, The Cutty Sark, The Greenwich observatory, or The Maritime museum. Or if you're feeling hopelessly romantic, you could always book an intimate dinner cruise for two and see a magical and twinkling London you hitherto never knew existed!
The city of London built its thriving trade around the great river Thames and boats have always been an important part of its landscape, making a river cruise one of the best ways to get a feel for this great city. Whether you're looking at the sinister 'Traitors gate' (which was the old river entrance to The Tower of London) or seeing Big Ben for the first time, there is much to enjoy, and from what better perspective than a cruise boat?
