Although some of them are less successful in achieving it than others, cruise lines need a high staff to passenger ratio to provide good service. the top ships approach one-to-one. Because of the need for staff and the sheer size of the industry (large ships cater, by definition, to over 1000 people on each journey), there are plenty of jobs going. In fact, the number of people working in the cruise industry is about 100,000 - a massive increase within a couple of decades. Almost matching the size of the workforce is the variety of employment on offer - a large proportion of the jobs you would find on land are also required on the water.

Most, though, are in the hospitality industry. It's no mean feat to feed 100s or even 1000s of people for a week or more - to manage it at all requires a lot of manpower and hard work, and to manage it well requires iron will and skills to match. There are positions for waiters/waitresses, bar staff, chefs, dish washers and so on. Eating isn't the only thing that happens on a cruise, of course - with the increased popularity of spas and gyms there are more and more openings for trained fitness instructors, beauticians and therapists. A legion of cleaners is also required on any decent ship. And then, of course, there are the people who physically make the ship work: electricians, engineers and the sailing crew.

As on land, pay on a cruise ship depends on what you are doing, but it can be very good. Contracts are generally four to six months but are usually easy to renew unless it's gone really badly. If you've made the decision to work on a ship, there are specialist employment agencies which you can register with who will keep you posted with vacancies and information. They also provide packages with interview tips and manuals on working in the cruise industry. You can also contact the cruise lines themselves to inquire about jobs and how best to apply for them.

If you have to pay to register or receive information from an agency it may be well worth it. However, bear in mind that any 'no risk' guarantee they offer may not be what it seems: agencies will sometimes ask to see a certain number of rejection letters before they will refund your money. But, as they must be aware, many cruise lines will not send out rejection letters. Just be careful when you spend money in this area.

There are lots of attractive things about the idea of cruise ship jobs - it's a chance to travel the world, working in a community atmosphere with lots of different people, seeing numerous places and cultures. The relatively quick turnover of staff means that lines are always on the lookout for new employees. But like any big industry, it has its horror stories - people doing the more labour-intensive jobs, such as kitchen and cleaning staff, have in particular complained of low pay and unreasonable hours on some cruise lines. and just because a line is big and well established doesn't mean it's exempt from this - sometimes quite the opposite. For more information on the darker side of cruise employment try publications such 'What it's Really Like to Work on Board Cruise Ships', a 2002 report by War on Want and the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITWF).
