Split Croatia - City Guide

Split
Split

Split is situated on the south west coast of Croatia, in a small peninsula that sits between the Split Channel and the Gulf of Kastela. The city is the main administrative centre of the Dalmatian region, but its economic importance is not its only asset.

There are vast sites of historic importance dotted around Split; most famous is Diocletian’s Palace, a 1700-year-old Roman settlement situated in the old town. The palace is exceedingly well preserved considering its age, and marks the site of the first Roman settlement in the area.

In addition to the palace, Split offers residents and visitors a great number of cultural treats, such as the National Theatre, which runs an impressive schedule of ballet. Each year, the city hosts the Split Music Festival, which is always followed by the summer theatre festival.

The majority of Split’s 150,000 inhabitants are Croats, and many great artists were born in the area, from composer Ivo Tijardovi to acclaimed author Mikenko Smoje.

Split is renowned as one of Europe’s sunniest destinations. Unsurprisingly, the general climate in this part of Croatia is very warm, particularly during the summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 30C. The winters are also relatively warm, although much wetter, accounting for the lion’s share of the country’s yearly rainfall which, on average, is around 900mm.

As far as transport and infrastructure are concerned, Split is very well organised. The local airport, Katela, welcomes almost one million passengers each year and is due for further expansion in 2008.

It has an excellent network of efficient expressways in and around the city and is also very well connected thanks to the A1 motorway, which runs all the way from Split to Croatia’s capital city, Zagreb Croatia.

In addition, a good ferry system operates out of Split harbour each day to Dubrovnik Croatia, Ancona and Rijeka Croatia. You can also reach most of the Dalmation Islands from Split, as well as a number of Italian destinations over the summer.
