Monteverde is a world renowned cloud forest reserve which has been lauded for the forward-thinking ecological preservation efforts enacted within it. The Monteverde Cloud Forest is biological and ecological treasure in Costa Rica's already rich landscape.

The area of Monteverde, which literally translates as "Green Mountain", sits on top of a 3500' plateau just above the Cordillera de Tilarán, a bumpy offshoot from the Inter-American Highway. Located in Costa Rica's well-preserved northwestern corner, Monteverde is a biological wonderland. The reserve is home to over 400 kinds of bird species, large communities of jaguars, ocelots, and tapirs, over 2,500 species of plants, and 1,200 reptilian and amphibian species.

The community of Monteverde was originally founded in 1951 when a group of US Quakers from Alabama, who were pacifists seeking refuge from the draft, relocated there because they identified with Costa Rica due to its political neutrality. These settlers strived to preserve and maintain the natural beauty of their new home land. Thankfully, they achieved their preservation efforts as well as seeing their community thrive.

Scientists from all over the world have long come to Monteverde in order to study and examine its rich ecological and biological qualities. The reserve is not actually a national park; it is instead run by the Tropical Science Center. This organization has carried out numerous projects dedicated to maintaining preserving this ecological jewel. Most adventure seekers come to Monteverde in order to hike its extensive network of hiking trails. These hikes allow visitors to truly see and experience the magic of the cloud forests. One does not generally need a guide when hiking the trail system at Monteverde due to its well marked and well mapped trails. There are also three cheap rustic backcountry huts located throughout the reserve that provide lodging for incoming backpackers.

Whether one is looking to conduct ecological studies or simply get out and experience the awe-inspiring cloud forests, Monteverde will give you what you are looking. The reserve is a magical place that visitors will remember for a lifetime.
