Nanning

Qingxiu MountainsNanning, meaning South Tranquillity, has developed hugely from a walled city to a cosmopolitan area full of high rises, expressways and bright lights. Most of Nanning’s growth was experienced from the mid 1900s where industrialisation of the city reached new heights. The city is located along the Yong River in southern Guangxi Zhuang and close to the Vietnam border. Because of this proximity to Vietnam, Nanning is often used as a transport gateway for travellers.

With a population well over 6 million, Nanning is a bustling metropolis that attracts thousands of visitors each year. Getting into Nanning is usually done through a domestic flight into Nanning Wuxu International Airport as there are only a few international flights and they are not operated on a daily schedule.

The large parks and lush landscape makes Nanning one of China’s “greenest” cities giving it the nickname of “Green City”. With copious natural wonders, Nanning pulls tourists from around the world to its gorgeous scenery and matching culture.

Start with the beautiful Qingxiu Mountains to admire its pure springs, incredible greenery and interesting stone formations. These mountains are also home to the cultural relic of the Dragon Elephant Pagoda and many gardens that are worth exploring including the Cycad Garden, the largest in the world.

Next seek out the De Tian Waterfall which is unsurprisingly the second largest trans-border waterfall in the world, once you see it you will understand why. With its 80m plunge, you can hear the thunder of the drop from miles away while enjoying the green flow amongst large hillsides.

Yiling Cave is another Nanning attraction not to be missed found in Liangman Mountain. Its name depicts the cave as a place similar in beauty as a palace. It is a Karst cave with many interestingly shaped stones and pillars. You can take a tour around the 45m deep cave with a guide.

After a long day of sightseeing, settle in at the Jiahecheng Hot Spring Valley where you can chose your own bathing style from Chinese to Turkish and many in between. There are plenty of activities above water once you have had enough of the water as well as a showing of tea houses.

You can easily travel throughout the year to Nanning as it has a subtropical climate with hot and humid summers, though not usually exceeding 33°C, and mild winters. The only thing to consider is avoiding the rainy season as Nanning receives a rather decent rainfall each year.

When considering accommodation in Nanning, a few to research include the budget hotels of the March Flower Hotel and Yingbing Hotel. For the mid-range, check out the Wan Xing Hotel and the Yin He Hotel while for a more luxurious stay take a look at the Best Western Premier Red Forest Hotel and the Guangxi Wharton International Hotel.
