Flights to Vienna - Suggested Itineraries

Vienna is served by a host of scheduled carriers and an ever expanding number of no frills airlines. The cost of flights to Vienna varies seasonally, with the cheapest fares available during the winter months (the opposite is true if you’re travelling to western Austria; where prices rise for the skiing season).

Flights land at Vienna International Airport which is conveniently located 18km south-east of the city centre. At the airport you’ll find all the standard amenities (such as car hire outlets, bureaux de changes and tourist information) as well as some more unusual facilities including a well-appointed Wellness Centre where you can get a relaxing massage.

From Vienna airport there are a number of ways of making the onwards journey into the city centre. The City Airport Train (CAT) takes just 15 minutes although you won’t get much change from a €10 note. A more economic option is to catch one of the municipal S-Bahn trains which operate between 5am and 10:30pm and take about thirty minutes. The advantage of catching the S-Bahn is that you’re already plugged directly into the local rail and underground (U-Bahn) networks. Alternatively you can hop on one of the buses which depart every 30 minutes from 5.30am-1.00am daily. Outside the arrivals hall you’ll find a plentiful supply of metered taxis who will take you into the capital for approximately €30. Direct flights from London take just over two hours to reach Vienna. Both national carriers (British Airways and Austrian Airlines) operate a number of scheduled direct daily flights between the two capitals. However, if you’re hoping to pick up a flight bargain it’s worth having a look at the new breed of budget airlines that now serve the Austrian capital, such as Air Berlin. Most flights from the United States involve a transfer in one of Europe’s larger aviation hubs, such as London or Amsterdam.

On most scheduled flights to Vienna the baggage allowance is 20kgs. Generally, hand luggage is limited to one piece per person weighing under 5kgs. Make sure you adhere to the luggage limit, as airlines have begun to be much stricter about enforcing weight restrictions.
