Dyed in the wool travel bores may cringe at the idea, but booking a Moscow tour is a great way of getting to know the city. Moscow has a limitless array of tours to choose from and you can go by foot, car, boat, or even on horseback.
Moscow’s tour guides are notoriously humourless and like to get straight down to business. However, most are ludicrously well-informed and you quickly get used to the deadpan delivery. Standard walking tours typically last about three hours and cost around $15 per person. Expect to see all of Moscow’s ‘big hitters’ including; the Kremlin, Red Square, Lenin’s Mausoleum, St Basil’s Cathedral and a host of lesser known sights (depending on your guide).

If you want to see a different side to Moscow book a place on a Weird Moscow Tour. The price tag of $50 may at first seem a little steep, but it’s for a group of four people and will certainly give you something to talk about when you get home (if anyone’s interested in secret observation towers and eerie subterranean cities).
Since the iron curtain lifted Moscow has embraced free market economics and today there are tours for seemingly everything; from a romp around capital’s liveliest nightspots to slow digestion of the city’s artistic heritage. However, there’s one tour that beats the lot, and that’s simply to hop on the metro. More than 40 of Moscow’s underground stations have been designated cultural landmarks; complete with marble flooring, stained glass windows and sublime statuary. Indeed the Moscow underground claims to have more chandeliers than Buckingham Palace, which is no mean feat.
Once you’ve had your fill of the stations themselves take a trip to Gorky Park, where you’ll get a real slice of muscovite life. Beside people watching you can ogle the abandoned space shuttle and, if you time your visit for winter; you can don a pair of skates and test your mettle on one of the park’s outdoor ice rinks.
