Manchester Weekend City Break - Attractions & Sightseeing
Manchester Central Station
Over the past decade, Manchester’s redevelopment has transformed the city into a cosmopolitan tourist destination to compete with the very best European weekend retreats. Its shops, hotels and restaurants are a world away from the limited variety on offer during the eighties and nineties, and the city now offers visitors the very best amenities combined with a rich history and good old Northern charm.
Manchester is located in the North of England, approximately three hours’ away by car from the capital city of London and just over 50 miles away from the popular seaside town of Blackpool in Lancashire. It has its own three-terminal international airport and is easily reached by bus, car and train. The Trafford Centre, a purpose-built out of town shopping centre complete with multi-screen cinema, scores of restaurants and its very own ski slope is another major attraction for tourists.
The city is famous for its football, and is home to two world-famous football clubs: Manchester United FC and Manchester City FC. It is also well-known for its home-grown musical talent, with bands like New Order, Oasis and Simply Red all originating from in and around the city and its suburbs.
Of course, there’s more to the town than just shopping and football. There are award-winning theatres and concert venues, art centres, libraries and museums, as well as beautiful churches and historic buildings. Visitors to the area looking for a more relaxed holiday may be surprised to learn that they are only a short distance away from the Peak District and the Lake District, and popular coastal resorts along the North Wales coast are easily reached within a few hours.
