Madrid’s triumvirate of luxury hotels is completed by the Santo Mauro Hotel, which until 1991 served as the Canadian Embassy. Mid-range Hotels: Madrid has a wide selection of mid-range hotels, but as standards vary enormously so it’s wise to shop around before handing over your credit card details. If you are hoping to stay in the historic city centre, the streets surrounding Plaza de Santa Ana and Plaza Mayor provide fertile hunting ground. A seasoned favourite with guidebook writers is the Gran Hotel Reina Victoria which regularly provides board and lodging to Spain’s leading bullfighters (expect to pay somewhere in the region of € 200 a night). Because the local Madrilenos have a passion for acting out their private lives in public (usually after dark) it might be worth forgoing ‘a room with a view’ for a quieter room at the back of the hotel. Otherwise head further a field to the distinctly upmarket districts of Receletos and Salamanca.
Budget Hotels: Budget rooms in Madrid fill up quickly so it’s a good idea to book well in advance. Shoestring travellers should be able to get a room in a local hostal for less than €40, and if that sounds like too much there’s always the option of pitching a tent at Camping Osuna near the airport. Back in the city centre it’s difficult to beat Hostal Oporto, facing the Thyssen Museum, near the Plaza de las Cortes. If it’s full; the Hostal Residencia Don Diego (on the fifth floor of Calle de Velázquez 45) comes a close second.
