Hotels in Madrid - Madrid-Hotels.BookInHotels.comHotels in Madrid cover the spectrum from sumptuous five-star palaces to backpackers doss houses that resemble something out of the Spanish Inquisition. In fact, Madrid has something tailored to suit every taste and wallet; it’s just a question of knowing where to look.
Luxury Hotels: Madrid boasts some of the finest hotels in Europe, and some of the most expensive. Celebrities and the financial elite alike make a beeline for The Ritz overlooking Plaza de la Lealtad. César Ritz’s creation is a lesson in opulence and despite a lavish makeover the hotel retains a distinct flavour of the belle époque. Competition for the title of Madrid’s gran dueña comes from The Westin Palace Hotel which serves as a testament to King Alfonso XIII’s fertile imagination. Madrid’s triumvirate of luxury hotels is completed by the Santo Mauro Hotel, which until 1991 served as the Canadian Embassy. Behind the neoclassical façade is a smart Art Deco interior and a guest book that reads like a copy of Who’s Who?
Mid-range Hotels: Madrid has a wide selection of mid-range hotels, but as standards vary enormously so it’s wise to shop around before handing over your credit card details. If you are hoping to stay in the historic city centre, the streets surrounding Plaza de Santa Ana and Plaza Mayor provide fertile hunting ground. A seasoned favourite with guidebook writers is the Gran Hotel Reina Victoria which regularly provides board and lodging to Spain’s leading bullfighters (expect to pay somewhere in the region of € 200 a night). Because the local Madrilenos have a passion for acting out their private lives in public (usually after dark) it might be worth forgoing ‘a room with a view’ for a quieter room at the back of the hotel. Otherwise head further a field to the distinctly upmarket districts of Receletos and Salamanca.
Budget Hotels: Budget rooms in Madrid fill up quickly so it’s a good idea to book well in advance. Shoestring travellers should be able to get a room in a local hostal for less than €40, and if that sounds like too much there’s always the option of pitching a tent at Camping Osuna near the airport. Back in the city centre it’s difficult to beat Hostal Oporto, facing the Thyssen Museum, near the Plaza de las Cortes. If it’s full; the Hostal Residencia Don Diego (on the fifth floor of Calle de Velázquez 45) comes a close second.
