Hotels and Accommodation in Reykjavik

In Reykjavik hotels are invariably welcoming and efficiently run. A wide range of accommodation is available; from simple hostels at the budget end (often only open in summer) to modern conference-style hotels offering every conceivable amenity. Expect to pay more than you would in Europe or North America and check what’s included in the price (breakfast is often extra).

The Hotel Borg, in the centre of the Old Town, proves that Reykjavik can deliver as much nostalgic grandeur as the finest hotels in Europe. However, the old world chic of its refurbished 1930’s interior comes at a characteristically Icelandic price; with double rooms starting at around £200 a night. A little further form the city centre the Hotel Saga is a regular favourite with guidebook writers and boasts an impressive range of facilities, including a penthouse restaurant and a fully kitted-out spa. For a more ‘cultured’ stay it’s difficult to beat the Hotel Holt, which displays one of the largest collections of Icelandic art in the country.

Architecture isn’t one of Reykjavik’s strong points and it’s easy to be put off some of the city’s best mid-range hotels by relying on aesthetics alone. Often you’ll find that behind an austere façade waits a warm welcome with an emphasis on comfort and hygiene. Reykjavik’s Fosshotel chain provides a great example. The Icelandic hotel chain has two representatives in the capital; the Fosshotel Baron (in the city centre) and the Fosshotel Lind (slightly further a field), both offering four-star accommodation at surprisingly affordable prices.

Traditionally budget travellers have had their work cut out finding reasonably priced hotel accommodation in the Icelandic capital. However, with Reykjavik now squarely on the European city break map there’s a growing number of guest houses and hostels to choose from. The recently renovated Adam Guesthouse is a safe bet (comfortable and central); if that’s full try the Guesthouse Vikingur. During the summer months dormitory beds can be found in the Icelandic Hotel Gardur (usually student digs). For a competitively priced alternative to hotel accommodation you’ll find a number of agencies letting apartments in the city centre.

No matter where you choose to stay, it’s important to book as early as possible as rooms fill-up quickly, especially at weekends.
