A short break to Iceland is the perfect excuse to get stuck into the great outdoors and sample some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Northern Hemisphere. If the idea of spending a few nights under canvas is unlikely to get your pulse racing; just wait until you’ve tried camping in the shadow of a rumbling volcano or soaking in a steaming geothermal pool after a good day’s hiking. Reykjavik may be just three hours from London, but with so many unique activities to choose from; Iceland feels a world away.
Saddle up and set off on a horseback trek around the base of Mount Hekla, Iceland’s best-known active volcano. Roam through eerily beautiful lava fields and waterfalls beneath the brooding summit of a monster of living geology.
Iceland’s long been a favourite hiking destination and it doesn’t get much better than along the south coast. Trails lead along black sandy beaches split by tumbling waterfalls and solid glaciers.
Drive into the heartland of the country on a jeep safari in search of the Northern Lights; Mother Nature’s captivating magic lantern show.
Sail into the North Atlantic on a whale watching trip, frequent sightings include: Humpbacks, Pilots, Sperm and Killer whales.
Go back-country skiing on the Hofsjökull glacier in the interior of the country.
Try out your whitewater rafting skills at Skagafjördur in northern Iceland on a choice of fast-flowing glacial rivers.
Ride to the summit of one of Iceland’s most beautiful mountains on a Snowmobile trip up the Snaefellsjokull glacier.
Explore the Westfjords with a sea kayaking excursion, dropping in on seal colonies and camping on the tranquil shores.
One you’ve had a go at any of the above it’s time to relax and unwind in one of Iceland’s many natural spa retreats.
Many of these activities can be pre-booked as part of a short break package, although it’s possible to organise most on arrival in Reykjavik. Reputable tour operators can be found through the Icelandic Tourist Boards official website.
