Cheap Flights to Budapest - Consumer Insight

In the not too distant past cheap flights to Budapest simply didn’t exist. The Hungarian capital was served by a limited number of scheduled airlines and passengers had little choice but to pay often exorbitant airfares. However, with the help of the Internet and the recent budget boom in budget airlines; finding cheap flights to Budapest has never been easier.

Everyone knows that cyberspace is prime hunting ground for cheap flights; the problem is finding them. We’ve teamed up with two of the web’s leading travel agents (expedia and opodo) to lend a hand, but there are plenty of other paths that are still worth investigating.

A growing number of no-frills airlines now serve Budapest and, if you’re prepared to do without allocated seating and a dodgy in-flight meal, you can get some real bargains. Easyjet is the most established budget operator flying from the UK to Budapest, but fresh competition comes from the likes of Air Berlin, Wizz Air and Sky Europe. The Hungarian national carrier Malev also offers substantial discounts to online customers.

Despite the web’s surging popularity; the majority of cheap flights are still sold through the high street. Local travel agents often have unsold package holidays to sell in a hurry and you can pick up some great bargains. As a rule of thumb you can expect accommodation to be included in the overall price. If you still aren’t having much luck the travel supplements of the Sunday newspapers carry plenty of phone numbers which provide a useful starting point. Cheap ‘last minute’ flights to Budapest can also be found on Teletext. Remember to include airport taxes in any estimate (as they can bump up costs considerably) and bear in mind that most budget airlines won’t refund cancelled tickets.

Budget airlines have something of a reputation for flying to provincial airports, which are often miles from the city centre. Luckily Budapest proves the exception to the rule and all cheap flights land at Ferihegy Airport. Once you’ve cleared customs there are buses to the city centre (departing every thirty minutes) from outside the arrivals hall. If you are travelling with armfuls of baggage, you may prefer to splash out a few extra fornits on the express shuttle minibus service. You’ll also find plenty of taxis vying for your business; make sure the meter is running before driving off or you’ll be stung later.
