Kealakekua Bay, Big Island
Hilo Big Island Hawaii - Kailua Kona Big Island Hawaii - Kealakekua Bay
Kealakekua Bay can be found on the west coast of the Big Island, otherwise known as the North Kona coast. Just over ten miles away from Kailua-Kona this bay is the resting place of the legendary Captain Cook who first set foot on Hawaii’s shores in 1779. The bay itself is characterized by steep cliffs which watch over one of the world’s most beautiful coral reefs. As you can imagine snorkeling and SCUBA diving are two of this area’s favourite pastimes.
Visting The Bay
The existence of the coral reef has led to Kealakekua Bay being declared a Marine Life Conservation District, a haven for a multitude of marine life including tropical fish, humpback whales, sea turtles and the graceful spinner dolphins. If you are into your American history you might be interested in chartering a boat to take you to the sleepy village of Napoopoo where you can visit the spot were Captain James Cook finally came to rest. A monument now stands in his honor. This is not the only historical treasure of the bay, not too far way is a sea cliff that goes by the name of Pali Kapu O Keoua. In days gone by this was the site of a temple where human sacrifice was a regular occurrence and where ancient Hawaiian Chiefs were honourably buried.
Today human sacrifices have been replaced by a bevy of recreational activities. Divers from around the world come to Kealakekua Bay to experience the beauty and marine life of the coral reef. The bay is also very close to the Kealakekua State Park which is a great place for swimming and kayaking. This park also serves as a departure point for cruises and is the place to come to if you are looking at renting a kayak or a boat. A favourite dive spot within the park is Kaawaloa Cove which is exceptionally shallow and is a coral reef in itself.
