Couple this with the fact that the island depends on fast double-lane highways which extend for miles and you begin to see how beneficial and convenient a rental car would be when exploring Hawaii. The highways run along the beautiful Kona Coast and the Hamakua Coast.
As previously mentioned the Big Island is extremely large in area and this makes the popular method of “circle touring” not very practical. In total a round trip will force you to cover 225 miles which equates to six hours driving time. If you think about it this leaves very little time to appreciate the attractions you will encounter on the way. We definitely recommend doing “an attraction a day” instead – not only will you get to truly experience the island but you will also find you will be less exhausted at the end of the day.

Remember the following rules:
- Seat belts are compulsory and are required to be worn by law.
- A right can be made on red is legal unless otherwise stated
- Highways maybe narrower than you are used to and a lot more “winding” so pay attention to any speed limits.
- Avoid the infamous “saddle road” as it is dangerously lacking in maintenance.
- You would do well to watch your fuel gauge as petrol stations are fairly few and far between and are not always 24hrs!
