As the summer months roll around the ultimate place for a fisherman is riverside at one of Alaska’s fishing lodges. Fishing in crystal clear rivers and tranquil lakes disturbed by nothing but fish fighting on the end of your line - is it any wonder Alaska is the definitive angler’s paradise?
Alaska fishing lodges are set apart by their flexibility. With the number of fishing lodges spread throughout the state, you’ll have no problem finding minimalism or luxury in your lodging. Price aside, the one thing uniting all these Alaska fishing lodges is the thrill of the catch.
Features of fishing lodges
Fishing lodges in Alaska are found strategically placed on almost every river, stream and lake in the state. Most are designed and built for access to returning runs of fish, making for consistently great catches. Built amongst some of Alaska’s most picturesque landscape, a lot of fishing lodges provide other activities like wildlife viewing, kayaking, flightseeing, horseback riding and white water rafting. In locations like these it almost doesn’t matter whether you fish or not – although the abundance of salmon and trout may convince you otherwise.
Alaska fishing lodges are owned and operated by dedicated fishermen, people dedicated to fishing and determined to make your stay at their lodge as memorable as possible. There’s not much you’ll find that they won’t do for you – from gutting, filleting and smoking fish to accommodating any number of dietary requirements.
Lodges have fishing experts and nature guides on staff to really make the most from your trip. Some lodges have shops selling any additional fishing equipment you might require, and can arrange bookings for you as you continue on your trip. It’s possible to have packed lunches made to eat riverside, or your guide will cook your freshly caught salmon for lunch. Early risers can have hot breakfasts delivered to them while they fish.
Options for accommodation
Lodges can range from the comfort and extravagance of five-star accommodation to the simplicity of bunked dormitories and buffet style dining. If luxury is your thing, make your way to some of the more upmarket resorts, where trained chefs will serve you seafood bisque, pheasant cassoulet, and oysters. Hot tubs and complimentary champagne are the perfect way to relax after a hard day on the river. Alternatively you can bunk down in pine or spruce log cabins with your family and friends, and even have the opportunity to cook your own dinner at some places.
While some Alaska fishing lodges provide all the mod cons, others prefer a back to basics approach for your stay. They won’t supply television, fax machine or e-mail for a true wilderness experience. Many cannot receive cellphone reception. Concern for their pristine environment is an important issue to many lodges, and recycling, solar power, reduction of waste and fishing catch and release practices are all commonplace.
