If you live in the capital the quickest way of getting to Heathrow airport is on Heathrow Express or by cab. Shoestring travellers can use the Piccadilly Line, but should be aware that they are in for a long ride. Anyone travelling by car can get to Heathrow on the M25 or the M4 motorways. Before setting off it's important to know which terminal you are travelling from, otherwise you might find yourself pushed for time (Terminals 1,2, and 3 are neighbours, while Terminal 4 is situated to the south).

Heathrow airport has a bewildering choice of airport car parks, which include the following: If you're simply dropping someone off you can do so at the dedicated areas outside each of the terminal forecourts. Waiting isn't permitted and you'll soon find yourself being chivvied along by the police. Anyone wanting to greet friends or family should head for one of the short stay car parks operated by the NCP (there's one for each terminal). If you're planning to park your vehicle for longer than five hours it makes financial sense follow the signposts to one of the two mid stay car parks (also dubbed business car parks).

Deciding which is best for you is largely a case of where you're flying from. Pink Elephant is well connected with Terminal 1 (five minutes in the shuttle bus), while the others are better served by Park and Fly. The cheapest parking solution is provided by Parking Express, which is situated just off the M4 motorway at Junction 4. From the long stay car park it's a 20 minute shuttle bus ride the airport, although you should leave a little longer to be safe. Tariffs start at £14.00 per day.

Parking Express shouldn't be confused with Express Parking which is a bespoke parking service targeted at British Airways Executive Club members and costs the earth. Valet Parking is also available, whereby you leave your car on the forecourt and it will be waiting there on your return.

Note: All car parks at Heathrow airport do not have the same security measures in place. Before you sign up it's a good idea to visit the relevant website's FAQ to see precisely what your chosen car park has done to ensure your vehicle safety.
