Gatwick is the UK's second biggest airport and boasts the impressive statistic of being the busiest single-runway airport in the world. At present Gatwick airport handles 30 million passengers a year, although this figure is estimated to swell to 40 million by 2010. Gatwick airport is well connected with public transport links. However, for anyone living outside the capital (who can't take advantage of the great rail links), the most convenient way of getting to Gatwick is by car. The airport is located 28 miles south of London, just off junction 12 on the M25 or junction 9 on the M23.
The good news for anyone looking for a parking space at Gatwick airport is that there are more than 27,000 to choose between. Nearly 4 million cars are parked at the airport each year, which means that you can expect a slick, well-polished service. Gatwick airport has the following parking options:
If you are dropping off passengers you can do so on the terminal forecourt, but bear in mind that and left vehicles will be towed away in a flash. If you want greet friends or family on arrival both terminals have short stay parking within walking distance of the airport buildings. Within the short stay car park you'll also find a dedicated 'Fast Track' parking area catering predominantly for business travellers (hence the hefty price tag).
Anyone wanting to leave their car for longer periods of time (typically holidaymakers) should follow the signposts to the 'Long Stay Car Park'. Passengers flying from the South Terminal should use the Parking Express car park, while those leaving from the North Terminal will find the Flightpath car park considerably more convenient. Both Long Stay car parks are linked to the airport terminals by a courtesy shuttle bus, which runs every 7 -10 minutes and takes less than 10 minutes to reach its destination. If you are staying for more than 8 days it's worth seeing what rates you will be offered at the nearby Courtlands car park (which serves both terminals). Rates vary depending on how long you stay.
If you're fortunate enough to be financially carefree you might want to consider Gatwick's Valet Parking service; whereby you can be dropped off and later picked up from the airport's forecourt for a small fortune.
Being one of the busiest airports in the country it comes as no surprise to learn that Gatwick airport is serviced by some of the slickest partners around. Airport parking is no exception, but standards do vary and it's a good idea to check what security precaution your chosen car park has taken. Expect a minimum of the following: Closed Circuit Television monitoring, frequent foot patrols, courtesy vehicle damage cover and robust fencing.
