Cardiff airport began life in the 1940's as a RAF training base, but it wasn't long before the airport was handling commercial flights. Today Cardiff airport is expanding at an unprecedented rate (in fact, it's the second fastest growing in the UK) and is used by more than 2 million passengers each year. Since the mid 1990's over £20 million has been ploughed into the airport; bringing it in line with the best airports in the country.

Cardiff airport is located just 12 miles west of the city centre and is easily reached from Junction 4 of the M4 motorway. Unfortunately public transport links aren't great (Barry Town is the nearest rail station, but it is still five miles away), which makes driving the most convenient option. Fortunately there are more than enough parking spaces to go around. By booking in advance you can expect to make considerable savings.
Cardiff airport's short stay car park is operated by NCP and is just a stone's throw form the terminal buildings. The short stay car park has been designed with two types of people in mind: firstly those wanting to pick-up or wave-off family and friends, and secondly business travellers. Pre-booking isn't necessary; just turn up and take a ticket at the entrance barrier. If you intend to leave your vehicle for longer than three hours then it's more economical to head for the long stay car park.
Cardiff airport's 'official' long stay car park is facing the airport and can be reached in a matter of minutes on foot. During the peak travel season (from May to October) a courtesy shuttle bus makes the short trip, otherwise it's down to legwork. The car park boasts 3000 spaces, so you're unlikely to be turned away. However, you'll save money with an early booking. Although there is no minimum stay; the most favourable rates are for anyone who parks for longer than seven days. Payment is made either at the barrier (if you've pre-booked) or using the machines dotted throughout the car park and in the arrivals hall. Disabled travellers may use the short stay car park for the same tariff as the long stay car park.
Other off-site car parks at Cardiff airport include:
Airparks Services (Port Road): Situated no more than 500 meters from the airport, next to the well-known Wales Airport Hotel. Transfers are arranged by phone and take no time at all. Number of spaces: 600.
The Highwayman Security Park (Fonmon): Currently the cheapest of all Cardiff airport's parking options. Because HSP is further from the airport than the others you have to complete your journey on a shuttle bus. The ride itself won't take more than 5-10 minutes, but caution dictates that you should leave at least 30 minutes.
Note: when choosing the right car park; don't confuse price with value. Always make sure you know what security measures the car park has (such as closed circuit TV surveillance, foot patrols, complimentary vehicle cover and sturdy fencing) and don't take any short cuts.
